The Long Night did not end on the seventh morning. The not-doing was the counting, and the empire had done the counting, for a thousand years, to be the burning.
The sky was the first of the stars, and the stars were the feeding, and the feeding was not the ending: the night was what the world had not done.
Orenthe was in the night, and the night was the lanterns, and the lanterns were the hands, and the hands were not closed; the singing was for the not-closing.
The city of Solmaren, under the body of the god, was not white on the seventh morning. The not-white was the Fall, the wound that had been, since the thousand years, the one thing the white stone had hidden. The Harvest did the hiding. The Harvest was the cup, and the cup was dry.
And the not-doing was the people, in the city, on the seventh morning: the lanterns, the hands, not closed.
---
They were afraid, the people of Orenthe, on the seventh morning.
The afraid was not the hunger. The hunger had been the dark, ten thousand years ago, out of the fear of the dark between the stars: the hoard, the cup, the dry.
The afraid of the seventh morning was not the fear. The not-fear was the lantern. The lantern was the hand. The hand was not closed.
The afraid was the cold, and the cold was what the god had been, before the light, ten thousand years before the counting.
They were cold, the people of Orenthe, on the seventh morning. The embers had gone out, on the fifth night, in the forges, in the orchards, in the storm, in the ash, in the tower. The out was the feeding, and the feeding was the first of the stars.
The cold was the world's not-doing.
Yrren came to the city on the ninth day, the way the rumor came: eleven years on the road, both ways.
She came the way the ash came. The spymasters had not walked it. The not-doing was the Fall, ten thousand years before the counting.
"You are the village," she said to Ashe, at the gate of the city, on the ninth day. The trade did the saying. "The village is the two hundred and thirty. They are the keeping. The keeping is what the ash did not do."
"And the not-doing is the lantern. The lantern is the hand. The hand is not closed. The not-closing is what the singing is for."
The two hundred and thirty came to the city on the ninth day, the way the village came: the rite did not do the coming. The rite had gone out, on the night of the Blackenings, in the hand of Maethan, at the body of the god.
And Maethan was not in the city on the ninth day. He was in the village, in the ash, in the water that moved. The tower had not done the being-in-the-water, and the not-doing was the first of the stars.
The two hundred and thirty did not build Hearths in the city on the ninth day. The not-building was the lantern: the hand not closed.
They built the first of the lantern-roads, out of the city on the ninth day, into the grain country, the harvest, the orchards, the growing of the Third Ember, which had gone out, on the fifth night, in the roots. The lantern-road was the one the empire did not name, and the not-naming was the keeping the two hundred and thirty had chosen to be.
And the out was the feeding. The feeding was the first of the stars.
The lantern-road was the one the empire did not name. The not-naming was the keeping the two hundred and thirty had chosen to be.
---
On the thirtieth night of the Long Night, the first of the new stars came up. The feeding had not done the coming-up: the feeding was slow, and the slow was the lantern.
The coming-up was the sharing, the sharing that had been, on the fifth night, in the forges, in the orchards, in the storm, in the ash, in the tower. The five were the six. The six were the god, and the god was not, on the night of the Blackenings: the heart, the ash.
The first of the new stars was not what the old sky had. The old sky was the hoard, what the sun had swallowed ten thousand years ago, out of the fear of the dark between the stars. The dark had been starving, and the starving was the taking-in, and the taking-in was the new sky, and the new sky was the first of the stars.
The people of Orenthe looked up on the thirtieth night. The looking-up was the singing's work. The singing was the old work of the Hearth-Singers, done a thousand years ago in the margins of the ledgers, grown over a hundred and forty years into the second scripture:
In the burning I am in pain.
But on the thirtieth night, the dream was not the burning; it was the night the world had not done.
The dream on the thirtieth night was the last. The last was what the god had done, on the fourth night, in the hand of the Frenzied who was not the Frenzied any more:
Sing the world the name of the night.
And the singing was the first of the stars. The first of the stars was the new sky. The new sky was the feeding. The feeding was not the ending.
And the not-ending was the world. The world was the night. The night was what the people of Orenthe did not do, on the thirtieth night, in the city that was not white, under the body of the god that was not.
They looked up; the singing was for the looking-up.
And the singing was what they did, on the thirtieth night, not in the cup, not in the Hearth, not in the song that the burning did not do, but in the lantern, in the hand that was not closed, in the ash that the spymasters did not do, in the water that moved.
They sang the world the name of the night, on the thirtieth night of the Long Night. The night did not end. The not-ending was the first of the stars.
---
In the burning the night is what the world did not do. The not-doing was the counting. The empire had done the counting, for a thousand years, to be the burning. The burning was Cressen. Cressen was the two hundred and thirty. They are the village. The village is the water. The water moves.
The first of the new stars came up on the thirtieth night. The coming-up was the sharing. The sharing was the six. The six were the god. The god is not, on the night of the Blackenings. The not was the heart. The heart was the ash. The ash is the village.
And the village is the water. The water moves. The ford did not know about the moving. The not-knowing is what the singing is for.
They sang the world the name of the night. The night did not end. The not-ending is the first of the stars. The stars are the new sky. The new sky is the Orenthe of the lanterns. The lanterns are the hands. The hands are not closed.
The not-closing is the sharing. The sharing is not the ending.
