The Vault was not a cathedral. The burning did not do the not-being. The not-doing was the ash, and the spymasters did not do the ash.
The Vault was the Fall. The Fall was ten thousand years before the counting. The counting was the empire. The empire did the burning.
The three of them went down into the Vault on the third morning, the way the wound went down: through the white stone that was not white, through the floor of the city, into the place where the body of the god was. The body was the cup, and the cup was dry.
The truth of the thousand-year bleed was there, in the dark under the city. The spymasters did not do the dark. The not-doing was the mind, and the mind was the word.
The body of the god was not a thing the empire named. The Harvest did the naming. The Harvest was the cup. The body was the Fall. The Fall was the six embers. The six were the rite. The rite was the killing.
Ashe put her hand to the body. The putting was not a cup. The putting was the hand. The hand was not closed. The not-closing was the road.
The body was the color of the road. The color of the road was what the ash had been. The two hundred and thirty did not do the ash.
The thousand-year bleed was on the body. The Harvest did the bleed, a thousand years before the counting. The counting was the empire.
The scars were the six. The six were the embers. The embers were the rite. The Sixth, the Dusk, the capstone, the door of the door, was here, in the body, at the bottom of the cup. The bottom was cold. The cold was what the god had been, before the light.
In the burning the body is the cup, and the cup is dry, and the dry is me. I am the bottom, and the bottom is cold. The cold was, before the light. The light is you, now, on the road, with the three embers, in the chest, under the water, and the water moves.
I am the door of the door. I am the cap that keeps the six from rolling away. The rolling-away is what the rite does not do. The not-doing is the killing. The killing is the Long Night.
Do not wake me. The waking is the killing. The one the Pyre is. The Pyre is the rite. The rite is the Blackenings. The Blackenings are one day away.
Feed the dark instead. The feeding is the first of the stars. The first is not the ending. The not-ending is what the singing is for.
The dream let her go. The going was the body, the body was the cup, and the cup was dry.
Liora stood at the edge of the body, with the chisel in the hand that was not closed.
She had come down into the place her father's empire had built on the wound, a thousand years ago. The forges had not come down with her. The not-doing was the heat, and the heat was the Second Ember, and the Second Ember was in her hand now, on the body.
"The binding," Liora said to the body, in the dark under the city. Her voice was not a door; it was the road. "The Vault did the binding a thousand years ago. The doing was the counting. The counting is the empire."
"Yes," Ashe said. "The singing was a binding, the binding was a cup, and the cup was drained."
"The binding is what I can do," Liora said. "The doing is the chisel. The chisel is the forges. The forges are the blood. The blood is the light."
Yrren looked at her. "The unmaking," she said. "The unmaking is what the ash did at Cressen, a thousand years ago — no: twenty years ago. The twenty years were what the counting did. The counting is the empire."
"I wrote the letter that burned Cressen," Liora said to the body, in the dark under the city. She was not lying, because the chisel did the saying. "The letter was the binding, and the binding was the cup. The cup is dry. The rite needs the dry. The rite is the killing."
"Then the unmaking is what I do," Liora said. "The doing is the not-killing. The not-killing is the feeding. The feeding is not the ending. The not-ending is what the singing is for."

They went out of the Vault on the third morning, into the city that was not white. The city was the Blackenings. The Blackenings were the one day. The one day was the rite.
And on the hill above the lowest quarter of the city, in the tower of the High Pyre, was the Archon. The Archon was the rite. The rite was the six: the three, in the chest, in the road, with the Frenzied of the Vault; the Fourth, in the fleet; the Fifth, in the cup of the Grey Quiet; and the Sixth, the capstone, in the tower, since the night of the Eclipse, when the hoard had flickered. The hunger had come through the flickering.
The Pyre had taken the Sixth out of the body on the night of the Eclipse. The seal did the taking. The banner did the carrying. The Sixth, the Dusk, the capstone, was what the tower held. The holding was the rite.
And the rite was the killing.
And the killing was the one day.

In the burning the body is the cup, and the cup is dry, and the dry is the rite, and the rite is the Archon, in the tower, on the hill, above the city that is not white. The not-white is the Blackenings. The Blackenings are one day away.
The Sixth is in the tower. The tower is the rite. The rite is the killing. The killing is the Long Night. The Night is the sky. The sky is going out.
The unmaking is the chisel. The chisel is the forges. The forges are the blood. The blood is the light. The light is what the Long Night did not know about. The not-knowing is what the singing is for.
