The Last Ember · chapter 16

The desert of the Grey Quiet was not a thing the ash knew.

The desert was the silence, and the silence was the Fifth Ember, and the Fifth was the mind, and the mind was the spymasters.

They came to the Quiet on the eleventh day out of Veranthe.

The monastery of the Grey Quiet was not a monastery. It was a cup, sunk into the desert the way the Vault was sunk into the hill above Solmaren. The spymasters had fed the cup, and the feeding had been the Harvest. The cup was dry now.

The silence of the desert was not the silence of the ash. The two hundred and thirty had chosen the ash's silence. The desert's silence was the mind's. The Pyre had the mind, and the having was the command, and the command was the name.

Yrren stopped at the edge of the cup, on the first evening.

"The desert is not the ash," she said to the five of them, at the edge. "The ash is the two hundred and thirty. They are the village. The desert is the mind. The mind is the spymasters. The spymasters are what the Pyre does. And the doing is the rite. The rite is the killing."

"Then we do not walk into the cup," Corvin said to the edge, the way the door said things.

"The Fifth Ember is in the cup, and the rite needs it there," Ashe said. "The rite is the Blackenings, and the Blackenings are three days away. The three days are not the road. The not-road is the desert."

They walked into the cup on the second morning.

The monastery was grey, the way the scholar's cloak was grey.

The monks of the Grey Quiet did not speak.

And in the cup, on the second night, they found the spymasters.

The spymasters were not in the monastery. They were in the cup, and the cup held the Fifth Ember. The five of them were in the cup on the second night, with the three embers the rite still needed, along with the Fourth, in the fleet, and the Sixth, in the Vault.

The commander of the spymasters was a man named Orel, and the Pyre had not named him.

"You are the spymasters," Orel said to Ashe, in the cup, on the second night. His voice was not a door; it was the road. "I have been the Pyre's word since the Harvest. The word was the tower, the tower was the seal, and the seal was the banner."

"The word," Ashe said, "is the cup. The cup is dry. The dry is what the rite needs."

"The rite," Orel said, "is the six. The six are the five cities. The five cities are the roads the Pyre named. The three you carry, in the cup, on the second night, are what the rite does not have. The not-having is the Fourth, in the fleet. The Fourth is the name the letter does not say. The not-saying is the three days. The three days are the Blackenings."

"It was always a trap," Yrren said to the cup. "The trap is the spymasters. The Pyre made them out of the reading. The reading was the letter the far side of the fire wrote on the road for four months. The four months are the Blackenings, and the Blackenings are what the rite needs."

Pellin, on the far side of the cup's fire, did not answer. The not-answering was the index, and the index was the ledgers, and the ash kept the not-doing.

---

In the burning the trap is the desert, and the desert is the mind, and the mind is the spymasters. The spymasters are what the Pyre did. The doing was the rite. The rite is the killing, and the killing is the Long Night. The Night is the sky, and the sky is the first of the new stars. The stars are the feeding, and the feeding is not the ending. The not-ending is what the singing is for.
