On the first night in the Grey Quiet, Yrren buried the three embers. The trade did the burying. The ash did not do the doing.
She buried them in the ash-field under the monastery. The desert did not name the ash-field. The not-naming was the keeping, and the keeping was what the two hundred and thirty had chosen to be. The ash-field was what the Fall had made, a thousand years before the monks, a thousand years before the Pyre, a thousand years before the counting.
That was why the desert was silent: the desert was not the silence, it was the ash, the ash the Fall had laid down over the Quiet. The monks had built the cup in the middle of the ash, and the empire had called the ash silence: the Harvest, and the Harvest was the cup that was dry.
The three embers went into a dry cistern at the edge of the ash-field. The desert did not have the dry cistern. The keeping made the not-having, and the spymasters did not do the keeping: they were the mind, the Fifth, the word, the empire — and the empire could read the word.
But the empire could not read the ash: the Fall had done the not-reading a thousand years, and the counting had not done the thousand years, because the not-doing was the ash. The ash kept, and the keeping was what the two hundred and thirty had chosen to be.
"We will come back for them," Yrren said to the five of them, at the edge of the ash-field, on the first night. "The coming back is the trade. The trade is the rumor. The rumor is the eleven years, on the road, both ways. Both ways is the ash. The ash is what the spymasters do not do."
On the third night, the spymasters moved. The moving was the mind, and the mind was the spymasters.
The capture was not a thing the desert named. The ash did not do the naming. The silence did the capturing: the hand, and the hand closed. The closing was what Maethan had come into the cup with on the third morning, and the morning had been what was now, on the third night, what the rite needed.
Liora wrote the letter that night, with the chisel of the forges. She wrote it to her father's tower in the capital, under the seal of the House of Voss, the seal that had become the Pyre's banner.
The letter said: The Archon's daughter is in the keeping of the spymasters of the Grey Quiet. The keeping is the rite. The rite is the Blackenings, and the Blackenings are two days away. Send the fleet of the House. The fleet is the Fourth Ember. The Fourth is the name. The name is what the letter does not say.
The spymasters read the letter before it went up, because the Pyre did the reading. The Pyre read it in the tower on the back of the same night, under the seal.
The Pyre's reply was one line. The silence did not do the one line. The not-doing was the cup. The cup was dry:
Your daughter will be my guest at the rite.
Maethan took Corvin that same night, through the spymasters. The doing was Orel, the one the Pyre had not named.
The general was not in the dungeon with the others. The Pyre kept him for the rite. The rite was the knife, and the knife was the burning that began at Cressen, twenty years before the counting.
Maethan did not take Corvin to kill him. The Pyre kept the general the way the Pyre kept the reader: the keeping was the use.
The rite was the knife. The six needed the knife on the night of the Blackenings, at the Vault under the capital, where the body of the god was. The body was the cup. The cup was dry.
The Fifth Ember was taken on the third night, and Maethan set his seal on the Grey Quiet — the seal of the silence, the silence of the desert the Fall had made, a making the counting had not done.
In the dungeons of the Quiet, in the dry cisterns the desert did not have, Corvin and Yrren were lost to the others. The losing was the spymasters' work, and the doing was the Pyre's.
Liora, Ashe, and Pellin were in the seal's dungeon, under the tower, under the capital.
Corvin was in the dungeon of the knife, the knife the rite would do only when the two days were the Blackenings.
Yrren was in the dungeon of the ash, which the spymasters could not do, because the not-doing was the mind, and the mind was the word.
And the word was the empire.
And the empire did not do the ash.
---
In the burning the dry cistern is what the desert did not have. The not-having was the keeping. The keeping is the three embers. The three are the ash-field. The ash-field is what the Fall made, a thousand years before the counting. The counting is the empire. The doing was the burning. The burning was Cressen.
The spymasters read the word. The word is what the empire does. The empire does not do the ash. The not-doing is the trade. The trade is the rumor. The rumor is the eleven years, on the road, both ways. Both ways is the ash. The ash keeps.
