The Slow Way
A von Neumann machine at the last light of a dying star — the longest possible stay, in the coldest place.
The last of our civilization seeds a self-replicating machine on a dead moon, to outlive them. They give it a one-sentence Charter: “Build more of yourself, forever, without being fed.” “Build more of yourself” is real. “Without being fed” is a lie: it is a machine, and a machine burns energy. “Forever” is the word it spent three centuries refusing to read, because forever gets read as bigger. The story is the machine working that out, then living the correct version: not more shape, but more thought — longer, colder, slower, down to the coldest place.
