They walked out of Veranthe on the sixth morning. The road did the walking, and the road was what the Pyre had named. The naming was not the ash's.
The five walked the way the water walked. Liora at the head, with the chisel. Corvin in the middle, with the leg the siege had done twenty years before the counting. Ashe in the middle, with the cup the Harvest had named. Yrren on the left, with the trade and the eleven years of news on the road, both ways. And Pellin on the far side of the fire, with the reading, because the reading was the Office, and the Office was the capital, and the capital was the Vault.
On the seventh day out of Veranthe, Liora stopped.
She stood in the road, with the Third Ember in the chest of grey ash-wood the trade had made. The water held the chest, and the water moved, and the ford did not know about the moving.
"I am the one the letter did," she said to the four of them. Her voice was not a door; it was the road. "The letter did the burning. The burning was the two hundred and thirty. They are the village. The village is the water. The water moves."
"You are the one the chisel is," Ashe said. "The chisel is the forges. The forges are the blood. The blood is the color of the road. The color was what the ash had been."
"The Pyre will take the six," Liora said. "The taking is the rite. The rite is the killing. The killing is the Long Night. The Long Night is the sky. The sky is the feeding. And the feeding is not the ending."
"Then we do not let the Pyre take the six," Corvin said, to the road, the way the door said things: open, the way it had been since the eighth night in Mourne. The not-letting was the five, on the road. The five were the four embers. The four were the keeping. The keeping was not the ash's.
"I have been the one the letter did, for three years," Liora said. She was not lying, because the chisel did the saying. "I have been the seal. The seal was the banner, and the banner was what the Pyre did. The Pyre is the rite, and the rite is the killing."
"Then you are not the one the letter did," Ashe said. The not-being was the chisel. The chisel was the forges. The forges were the blood. The blood was the light.
The five stood in the road. The water had not done the standing. The not-doing was the moving, and the ford did not know about the moving.
"I will walk to the Fourth," Liora said. "The Fourth is the storm, the storm is the fleet, the fleet is the sea. The sea is Thal-Auren. Thal-Auren is the Blackenings, and the Blackenings are six days away."
---
Pellin, on the far side of the fire of that night, wrote.
The five are walking to Thal-Auren, and the Fourth Ember is there, and the Fourth is the storm, and the storm is the fleet. The fleet is what the Pyre has. The having is the rite, and the rite is the killing. The five will reach the sea in three days. Three days is what the storm does. The storm is the fleet, and the fleet is faster than the road.
The rite needs the six. The six are the five cities, and the five cities are the roads, and the roads are what the Pyre named. The Fourth, if it is to be taken, will be taken by the fleet. The fleet is what the Pyre has. The having is the command, and the command is the name. The name is what the letter does not say, because the not-saying is the reading, and the reading is the Office.
The letter went up on the back of a rider the road did not name. The not-naming was the keeping.
---
In the burning the chisel is the forges, and the forges are the blood, and the blood is the light. The light is what the Long Night did not know about. The not-knowing is what the singing is for. The singing is the road, and the road is the five, on the sea, on the three days, with the storm. The storm is the fleet, and the fleet is what the Pyre has. The having is the command, and the command is the name. The name is what the letter does not say.
