The Last Ember · chapter 21

They marched on Solmaren the way the ash marched. The spymasters had not done the ash: the not-doing was the Fall, a thousand years before the counting.

The three of them: Ashe in the middle, with the cup on her arm, the cup the Harvest had named in the Vault. Yrren on the left, with the trade, the rumor, the eleven years. Liora at the head, with the chisel, the forges.

The three embers went in the chest of grey ash-wood the trade had made in Redmills, on the cart the three of them had come in on the seventh day out of Mourne. The not-noticing was the plain, with the hand, the hand not closed.

The First, the Second, and the Third, in the chest, under the water that moved. The ford did not know about the moving.

Liora walked at the head of them, the forges at her head, the blood, the color of the road, the ash.

She did not speak on the march. The sky had gone out on the fifth night, in the flickering, and the hunger had come through the flickering: the first of the stars.

Liora had seen the hunger, on the night of the Eclipse. She had seen it the way the smiths of Korath had seen the blood, in the hundred hands, at the rite: the knowing that was what the Pyre did not do.

And the hunger, in her sight, on the night of the Eclipse, had been the face. The face was not a thing the sky had. The not-having was the taking. The taking was the Harvest.

She walked. The walking was the half-sun, the grief, the letter she had written, with the chisel, at Cressen, twenty years before the counting.

Ashe did not say anything to her on the march. The road walked. The walking was the three days, and the three days were the Blackenings, and the Blackenings were the rite, and the rite was the killing.

Yrren said it on the first night of the march, at the fire that was not the Harvest:

"Your face is the letter," she said to Liora. "The letter did the burning. The burning was the two hundred and thirty. They are the village. The village is the water. The water moves."

Liora looked at her. The not-doing was the heat.

"The hunger is what I saw on the night of the Eclipse," Liora said to the fire. "It came through the flickering, the flickering is the sky going out, and the going-out is what the three embers did. The three are what the Pyre is."

"And the Pyre is the rite," Yrren said. "The rite is the killing. The killing is the Long Night. The Night is the feeding. The feeding is not the ending."

"The feeding is not the ending," Liora said to the fire. "The not-ending is what the singing is for. The singing is what I did not do at Cressen. The not-doing was the letter. The letter was the two hundred and thirty. They are the village."

Ashe put her hand on Liora's. The putting was not the door: it was the road, and the road did not stop at the place where the order had been.

"Then we do not sing it at the Vault," Ashe said to the fire. The not-singing was the ash, the Fall, the dark, the first of the stars.

---

On the second night of the march, the sky went out again, and the going-out was not the flickering the hunger had come through.

The going-out on the second night was what the Pyre did. Maethan had drawn the hoard, on the second night, from the tower in the capital: the drawing that was the six, and the six that were the rite.

The sky over the road was the color of the cup, and the cup was dry, and the rite needed the dry, and the rite was the killing.

The three of them walked under it. The ash did the walking. The spymasters had not done the ash, and the not-doing was the Fall, a thousand years before the counting.

Yrren looked up at the sky.

"The first of the stars is the feeding," she said to the sky. "The feeding is not the ending. The singing is for the not-ending, and the singing is what I am on the road, with the three embers, in the chest, under the water. The water moves."

---

Solmaren came up out of the plain on the third morning. The coming-up was the wound: the wound the Fall had made, ten thousand years before the counting.

The city was built on the wound, the way you build on a thing that has bled for a thousand years: close, and proud, with the wound hidden under a floor of white stone.

The white stone, on the third morning, was not white. The not-white was the Blackenings, and the Blackenings were the rite, and the rite was the one day, and the one day was the Vault.

The whole of Orenthe had looked up on the night of the Eclipse. The hunger had come through the looking-up. The hunger was the first of the stars, and the first of the stars was the feeding, and the feeding was not the ending.

The feeding did not do the city. The not-doing was the cup, and the cup was dry, and the rite was the killing, and the killing was the Long Night.

And the Long Night was the sky. The sky was going out, on the third morning, under the white stone that was not white, of the city that was built on the wound.

The three of them walked into Solmaren the way the ash walked, because the spymasters did not do the ash, and the not-doing was the Fall, a thousand years before the counting.

The Vault was on the hill above the lowest quarter of the city, and the hill was the wound the Fall had made, a making the counting had not done.

And in the Vault, on the hill, was the body of the god: the body that was the cup, and the cup that was dry. The rite was Maethan, and Maethan was the one day, and the one day was the Blackenings.

---

In the burning the city is the wound. The wound is what the Fall made, a thousand years before the counting. The counting is the empire. The doing was the burning. The burning was Cressen. Cressen was the two hundred and thirty. They are the village. The village is the water. The water moves.

The white stone is not white, on the third morning. The not-white is the Blackenings. The Blackenings are the rite. The rite is the killing. The killing is the Long Night. The Night is the sky. The sky is going out.

The feeding is not the ending. The not-ending is what the singing is for. The singing is the three of them, on the road, under the sky that is going out, into the city that is the wound. The wound is the body. The body was the cup. The cup is dry.
