The Second World
A second world where power is a fixed total that never refills — every spell is a spend, not an income.
Our people build a one-way gate and send a scholar through to live in another world, with a one-sentence promise: “Live here as long as you wish, and your power will not run out.” The first half is true; the second is a lie. In a world, power is energy, and energy is a fixed total that never refills. Every spell is a spend. The whole story is the scholar working that out, then living the correct version: not more power, but longer staying — spent as slowly and as coldly as physics allows.
