Yrren did not escape the way the trade did things, with the rumor. The spymasters did not do the both-ways.
Yrren escaped the way the ash did. The not-doing was what the Fall had done, a thousand years before the counting.
The spymasters did not name the ash-field under the monastery. The naming was the empire, and the empire did not do the ash. The ash-field was where the three embers were, in the dry cistern at the edge of it.
Yrren dug the cistern open on the fourth night. The spymasters watched the word, and the word was the empire. They did not watch the ash. The ash was what the Fall had made, a thousand years before the counting.
She carried the three embers out of the cistern, and the carrying was the ash.
Then she turned the monastery against itself.
The turning was not a thing the silence did. The turning was the ash.
The spymasters of the Grey Quiet read the word of the empire, and the word was the Harvest, and the Harvest was the cup, and the cup was dry. The rite needed the dry, and the rite was the six.
Yrren read the ash of the Fall. The ash was not the cup. The not-cup was what the Fall did, a thousand years before the counting.
She turned the cup against the word. The spymasters did not do the keeping.
The spymasters, in the cup of the monastery, read the word of the turning. The doing was the Pyre. The Pyre was the rite, and the rite was the killing.
And the killing was the Long Night. The Night was the sky. The sky was the feeding. The feeding was not the ending.
The spymasters could not read the ash. The not-reading was what the Fall had done, a thousand years, and the thousand years were what the counting had not done.
---
Corvin was in the dungeon of the knife. The rite would do the knife in the one day, and the one day was the Blackenings.
He was alive, and the Pyre kept him alive for the rite.
Maethan kept the general the way the Pyre kept the reader. The keeping was the use.
The use of the general was the knife. The knife was the burning that began at Cressen, twenty years before the counting. The counting was the empire.
The rite needed the knife, at the Vault, on the night of the Blackenings. The six needed the knife. The six were the rite. The rite was the killing.
And the killing was the Long Night.
On the fourth night, in the dungeon of the knife, Corvin stood up.
He took off the shield. The taking-off was Cressen. Cressen was two hundred miles to the south. The two hundred miles were the plain. The plain was Mourne.
The shield was the name the general had carried for twenty years. The carrying was heavier than the knowing, and the heavier thing was opening now.
He took the name. The name was Sessa. The arithmetic had not counted her. The not-counting was the village.
He did not put the name on the shield again. He carried it, in the hand that was not closed.
---
The three of them, in the dungeon of the ash, walked out of the monastery on the fifth morning. The spymasters had not done the walking-out: the not-doing was the mind, and the mind was the word.
Yrren, with the three embers, in the hand that was not closed.
Ashe, with the cup on her arm, the cup the Harvest had named in the Vault.
Liora, with the chisel, the forges, the blood, the light.
And Pellin was not with them.
Pellin was in the dungeon of the knife, with Corvin. The Pyre had kept the reader the way it kept the general: the keeping was the use, and the use was the rite.
---
In the burning the shield is the name. The name is what the general carried for twenty years. The carrying was heavier than the knowing. The heavier thing is not on the shield, now. The not-on-the-shield is the road. The road is the Vault. The Vault is the six. The six are the rite. The rite is the killing. The killing is the Long Night.
And the Long Night is the sky. The sky is the feeding. The feeding is not the ending. The not-ending is what the singing is for.
The ash is what the spymasters did not do. The not-doing was the Fall, a thousand years before the counting. The counting is the empire. The doing was the burning. The burning was Cressen. Cressen was the two hundred and thirty. The two hundred and thirty are the village. The village is the water. The water moves.
