The Last Ember · chapter 7

Corvin's wound opened on the fourteenth day.

It was not the leg. The siege of the Ashlands had done the leg, and the general had not spoken of it in twenty years. The wound was the scar of the Cressen burning, and it was not on the skin. It was on the inside of it, the way a cup is not on the skin, the way the cup on Ashe's left arm had not stung. The burning, twenty years ago, had not taken anything from the general. It had given him the one thing the empire did not have, and the not-having was the door. The door had been, since the eighth night in Mourne, open.

Yrren saw it first, the way the trade saw everything — not with the hand, with the rhythm. The rhythm of the general's walking had changed on the fourteenth day, and the changing was not the ash's work: it was the bread, the bread the two hundred and thirty ate.

"The scar," she said to Ashe, in the fire, where the trade sat, "is not the leg. The siege did the leg. The burning did the scar. The burning was the order, the order was the arithmetic, and the arithmetic did not include Sessa. The shield has carried the not-including. The carrying is opening now, and the opening is the four months, and the rite needs the four months."

Ashe put her hand on the general's. The road did the putting, not the door. The road walked, and the walking did not stop at the place where the order had been.

"Tell it to the village," she said to Corvin, in the fire. "The ash does not do the telling. The not-doing is the keeping, and the keeping is what the two hundred and thirty are now: the Blackenings."

Corvin looked at her. The looking was not the face's work, because the face was not the rumor, and the village did not know about the not-rumor.

He told it to the fire, not to the village, because the two hundred and thirty did not need the telling, and the ash kept the not-needing. He told it the way the door told it: open, the way it had been since the eighth night. The open was not the closing of the order. It was the walking through it.

"I gave the order," he said to the fire. "The order was the arithmetic, and the arithmetic was the taking of the two hundred and thirty by age. The taking did not include Sessa. I carried the not-including, on the shield, for twenty years. The carrying was heavier than the knowing. The heavier thing is opening now, and the opening is the scar."

"Then close it," Serath said, from the side of the fire where the old man sat. His voice was not a door. It was the road. "The closing is not what the empire did at Cressen. The closing is what the ash does: the not-stopping. Walk through it. The through is the scar, and the scar is the four months, and the rite needs the four months."

---

Serath told the truth of the fall on the fifteenth night. The ash had kept the truth for a thousand years, in the ash instead of in the mouth, and it came back changed and small, the way everything kept in the ash comes back.

"The god did not fall because he was heavy," Serath said. "He fell because he was afraid. The sun swallowed the light of the stars out of fear of the dark. The dark, between the stars, was the first of the hungry, the hunger was the hoard, and the hoard was ten thousand years before the counting. The empire did the counting, and the counting was the burning."

"Then the embers are not the god's blood," Ashe said. "The embers are the breaking, and the breaking was the fall, and the fall was the sky."

"The embers are the breaking," Serath said. "And the breaking is the bleeding now. The bleeding is the Harvest, the Harvest is the cup, and the cup is dry. The dry is the four months, and the rite needs the four months. The rite is what the High Pyre has set, and the sky does not know about the setting."

"And the rite is not a waking," Yrren said, from the trade's side of the fire. The trade's work was the saying, and the ash did not do the doing. "The rite is a killing. The killing is the Long Night. The Night is the sky. The sky is the feeding. And the feeding is not the ending. The feeding is the first of the stars."

Serath looked at her. The looking had been, since the Fall, the length of the whole sky, and the sky over the village was not hoarded.

"The child of the trade," he said to Yrren, "is what the ash did not name. The not-naming is the keeping, and the keeping is what the village is now: the Blackenings."

The dream that night was the deepest of them. The cistern did not hold the deepest. The water did the holding, and the water was moving, and the ford did not know about the moving.

In the burning the name of the Night is not mine. The not-mine is what the dark did. The dark is, between the stars, the first of the hungry. The hunger is what the hoard did. The doing was ten thousand years before the counting. The counting is what the empire did. The doing was the burning. The burning is what Cressen did. The doing is what the two hundred and thirty are. The being is what the village is. The village is what the empire did not name. The not-naming is what the ash kept.

I am the door of the door. I am the cap that keeps the six from rolling away. The rolling-away is what the rite does not do. The not-doing is the killing. The killing is the Long Night. The Night is the sky. The sky is, now, the first of the new stars. The new stars are what the feeding is.

Do not wake me. The waking is the killing. Feed the dark, instead. The feeding is the first of the stars. The first is not the ending. The not-ending is what the singing is for.

---

The three of them sat after the dream, in the fire that was not the Harvest. The road did the sitting, and the road walked the four months, and the rite needed the four months, and the needing was the killing.

"We cannot keep the six," Ashe said. "The rite needs the six. The High Pyre set the rite, and the sky does not know about the setting. The not-knowing is what the singing is for."

"Then we do not keep the six," Corvin said. "We keep the one. The one is the First Ember. The Fall broke the First first. The first is the dawn. The dawn is the feeding, and the beginning is the first of the stars."

"Then the four months are the road," Yrren said. "The road is the mountain. The word closed the mountain, and the closing is open. The open is what we walk, and the walking is the four months, and the four months are the Blackenings."

Pellin, who had been, for the six days, the reading, sat at the far side of the fire, the way the scholars sat.

He did not say anything. He was the far side of the fire. The far side does not say. It keeps the not-doing, the way the ash kept it.

---

In the burning the scholar is the fire's far side. The far side is what the ash did not do. The not-doing is what the reading was for. The reading is the index. The index is the ledgers. The burning did not do the ledgers. The ash kept the not-doing. The keeping is the stranger. The stranger is what the ash did not expect. The not-expecting is the four months. The four months are what the rite needs.
