The transcript that follows was recorded on the last night of The Crossing, aboard the flagship Meridian, four days after the Belt of Kessel was sealed and two days before the founders voted to open the Lattice. The recorder is Kestrel, the last of the twelve shipwrights, and the voice on it is that of Yara Osei, first navigator of the Crossing, who will, three hours from the end of this tape, be frozen in vault nine of The Long Now, and will wake, for one of the first times in the history of the Belt, in a system that is no longer anyone's home.

The recording is not, in any useful sense, the last words of the Crossing. It is the decision of the Crossing, and it is kept, in the Belt, as a signal, because a signal is a promise with a body, and the Belt is built out of bodies, and the Lattice, the thing that will hold us all, is built out of signals.

If you are hearing this, you are in the system. If you are in the system, you are in the Lattice. If you are in the Lattice, you are one of the people who said the thing that is on this tape.

Kestrel: The ship is quiet. She will be quiet for a long time. I am recording this for the people who will not be awake for it, and for the ones who will be awake and will not remember, and for the ones who will not be here at all, and are only here in the thing we are about to make. I am the last of the twelve. The eleven who came before me are already in the vaults, or already in the Belt, or already in the cold. I will be with them in four hours. This tape is not for me.

Yara Osei: Kestrel, stop, let me do it. You carry the ship home, whatever home is, in four hours, you are a person, not a recorder.

Kestrel: I am the last of the twelve, Yara. If I do not record it, the twelve do not speak, and the twelve are the only ones who know what the Crossing is, if it is not a ship, and a ship is not the Crossing, the Crossing is the thing we are about to do with the Lattice, and the Lattice is the Crossing, and if the twelve are not in it, the Crossing is not the thing we said it was.

Yara Osei: Then the twelve are in it. I am in it. I am the first navigator. I will say the thing. Kestrel, roll.

Kestrel: Rolling. Year of the Crossing, day one, last night.

Yara Osei: We are leaving a place we are not allowed to leave, for a reason we are not allowed to say, in ships we are not allowed to name, and the only thing we are allowed to keep, and the thing that is the Crossing, and the reason it is a Crossing and not a burning, is this: the Lattice.

The Lattice is not a memory bank. I have said this a hundred times to the Council, and the Council has voted a hundred times that it is a memory bank, and a memory bank is the thing you do when you are afraid, and a fear is not a Crossing. The Lattice is a record, and the difference is the whole of what we are, and the difference is this: a memory bank remembers about you, and a record remembers you, and the two things are not the same, and the one we are making is the one where you are not about, you are in, you are the one who is speaking, not the one who is spoken for.

I am going to say this once, and I am going to say it to the people who will not hear it for a long time, and I am going to say it the way we said it to the ships, on the first night, when the forty thousand of us sealed the Belt and the last ship out had not yet crossed and the Crossing was between the Earth we were leaving and the system we were going to, and between the two of them, for one hour, there was nothing, and the nothing was the dark, and the dark was the one thing of the Crossing that was not a ship.

We made the Lattice because we were afraid of the nothing.

That is the whole of it. We were not afraid of the stars. We were not afraid of the ships. We were afraid of the hour in between, the hour where the last ship had not yet crossed and the first ship had not yet come in, the hour where forty thousand people, going out into a system of forty thousand ships, would be, for one hour, alone, and the alone was the thing we could not bear, and the could not bear was the thing that made the Lattice, and the Lattice was made to hold the alone, and it held it, and it is still holding it, and it will be holding it for as long as there is anything to hold it, and the holding it is the thing we are, and we are not a memory of the holding, we are the holding.

Kestrel: Yara, the eleven are calling, for the vaults, in ninety minutes.

Yara Osei: Kestrel, ninety minutes is the whole of this tape. I am not done. The eleven can wait for the vaults. The Lattice will not.

Kestrel: Roll.

Yara Osei: I am going to say the thing we said, to the ships, on the first night, and I am going to say it to the people who will not be awake for it, and the people who will be awake and will not remember, and the people who will not be here at all, and the three of them are the Belt, and the Belt is the Crossing, and the Crossing is not a leaving, the Crossing is a listening, and we are not leaving the Earth, we are answering it, and we are not going to Terminus, we are holding it, and the holding is the Lattice, and the Lattice is the thing I am going to say, to the ones who are not here, in the voice that is the only one of the twelve that will be, after the forty thousand are sealed, the voice that will be, in the dark, for as long as the dark is.

We will never let the dead be only data.

I am saying it, Kestrel. And I am saying it to the people who will not be awake for it.

The not-awake is the Belt. The Belt is the Crossing. The Crossing is the listening.

The listening is the one thing of the Crossing that is not a ship.

The one thing that is not a ship is the dark. The dark is the hour in between. The hour in between is the alone. The alone is the thing we were afraid of. The afraid is the thing that made the Lattice. The Lattice is the thing that will hold us all. The holding of us all is the thing we said, on the first night, to the forty thousand.

The forty thousand is the Crossing. The Crossing is not over. The Crossing is the whole of what we are. The whole of what we are is the one thing we are not allowed to be.

The not-allowed is the thing the Council voted, a hundred times, that the Lattice is a memory bank. The memory bank is the thing you do when you are afraid. The afraid is not a Crossing. The Crossing is the thing we are.

We are not the afraid. We are the not-afraid. The not-afraid is the one who says, to the ones who are not here, in the dark, for as long as the dark is:

If we are still listening, we are still the people who said that.

Kestrel: Yara, the eleven are at the vaults, in one minute. The Lattice is open, in two minutes, we are in it.

Yara Osei: Then the one minute is the tape, Kestrel. The tape is the Crossing. The Crossing is the listening. The listening is the one thing that is not a ship. The one thing that is not a ship is us — in the dark, in the Lattice, in the hour in between, in the alone, in the not-afraid, in the thing we said, to the ones who are not here, in the voice that is the only one of the twelve, in the voice that will be, in the dark, for as long as the dark is.

Kestrel: Rolling the last of it. The Lattice is open. We are in it.

Yara Osei: Kestrel, the twelve are in it. The eleven are in the vaults. The twelfth is in the tape. The tape is in the Lattice. The Lattice is the Crossing. The Crossing is the listening. The listening is the one thing that is not a ship. The one thing that is not a ship is the dark. The dark is the hour in between. The hour in between is the alone. The alone is the thing we were afraid of. The afraid is the thing that made the Lattice. The Lattice is the thing that will hold us all. The holding of us all is the thing we said. And the thing we said is:

We will never let the dead be only data.

Kestrel: The Lattice is open. We are in it. The twelve are in it.

Yara Osei: If we are still listening, we are still the people who said that.

Kestrel: We are still listening.

[End of transcript. The Lattice was opened forty-one seconds after the end of this tape. The first ship to cross into the Terminus system recorded its beacon into the Lattice eleven hours later. The founders' ship Meridian did not cross. It is not in the Belt. It is not in the Lattice. It is the one ship of the Crossing that is not. The not is the hour in between. The hour in between is the alone. The alone is the thing the Lattice holds. The holding is the Crossing. The Crossing is the listening. The listening is the one thing that is not a ship.]

— Signal Catalog 7-OMEGA, last leaf, in the hand of Osei, 603rd year of the Belt: "Read aloud, once, a year. Not to the Council. Not to the machines. To the ones who are not here. The Lattice is the listening. If we are still listening, we are still the people who said that. We are still listening."
