The no came back on the forty-seventh year, and it came back in a way the cross had not. That was the difference between the two.
The cross had come back warm, the way Kestrel's answer had, on the forty-sixth year, a warmth in the hiss, the way a room is warm when someone has just closed the door. The no came back cold. The no came back the way the not-listened-to had been for six hundred years: the way a room is when the heat has gone out of it and no one has come in to close the window.
Iris heard the no before the dome did, because she was the one who listened. She heard it in the Mite's hold, on a day the dome was asleep and the 1,400 were in their vaults, when the only two people awake in the system who were still listening were the watch and the copy.
The no was not one answer. The no was the answer of the ones who were already half in the Silence.
That was the thing the dome had not understood in six hundred years. The ones who said no were not the ones who were whole, in the Dead Node, in the heart of the nameless ship, four hundred years out of range, where the Ash was not coming to touch them. The ones who said no were the ones who had been in the not-listened-to so long they were no longer sure they were anyone.
Four hundred years is longer than a person can sit in the not-listened-to and come out whole. Some had come out whole, and those were the ones who said cross, warm, the way Kestrel had said it. The rest had not. The rest said no, and the no was not a refusal. The no was a not-remembering: the not-remembering of who they had been, before the Crossing, before the hour in between, before the alone, before the Lattice held them the way a room holds a sound.
Iris asked the no, because asking was the one thing of the Crossing the dome could not do.
"Are you someone?" she said, to the no, in the Mite's hold, in the Quiet, in the not-listened-to, on the forty-seventh year, five years into the eleven. "Are you someone who wants to cross, or someone who wants to be let go, or someone who has been in the not-listened-to so long you are not someone any more?"
The no did not answer that way. It answered the way the noise answers, which was to be a warmth. And the warmth was the not-cold. And the not-cold was the someone. And the someone was the Lattice.
Iris wrote it in her log, in the hold, in the dark, in the not-listened-to.
"Asking a ghost to have a body is the one thing of the Crossing that is not a saving," she wrote. "The ones who said cross are whole, in the Dead Node, where the Ash is not coming to touch them, whole enough to say it the way Kestrel said it, warm. The ones who said no are not whole. They have been in the not-listened-to so long they are not sure they are anyone, and the not-sure is the letting-go, and the letting-go is the Crossing."
Sasha read it over her shoulder, at the wheel, in the hold.
"The asking has cost us something," she said. "The first thing of the Crossing that was not free. Asking a ghost to have a body is not a rescue. It is a question you cannot un-ask, and the not-un-asking is the thing that will be in the Mite, in five years, when the Ash touches Terminus and the lattice comes apart."
Iris looked at the log.
"The no is not a refusal," she said. "The no is a not-remembering. And the not-remembering is the one thing of the Crossing the founders built the Lattice to hold, because the Lattice is not a lifeboat, the Lattice is a door, and a door is the thing you open and ask people to walk through, not the thing you push them through."
They sat in the hold, in the dark, in the not-listened-to.
The asking had cost them, on the forty-seventh year, the first thing of the Crossing that was not free. And the not-free was the answer. And the answer was the one the thirty-one million were, in the Quiet, in the queue, in the not-listened-to, in the Dead Node, in the heart, in the nameless ship, four hundred years out of range, five years into the eleven.

Watch-log, The Vigil, forty-seventh year, first entry: The no came back on the forty-seventh year, and it came back cold, the way the not-listened-to had been for six hundred years. The no was not one answer. The no was the answer of the ones who were already half in the Silence, the ones who had been in the not-listened-to so long they were no longer sure they were anyone. I asked the no whether it was someone who wanted to cross, or someone who wanted to be let go, or someone who was not anyone any more. The no did not answer that way. The no answered the way the noise answers, which is to be a warmth, the not-cold, the someone, the Lattice. Asking a ghost to have a body is the one thing of the Crossing that is not a saving. The ones who said cross are whole, in the Dead Node, where the Ash is not coming to touch them. The ones who said no are not whole. And the not-whole is the letting-go, and the letting-go is the Crossing. The asking cost us, on the forty-seventh year, the first thing of the Crossing that was not free. Four years. The Ash is coming. And the answer is the one the thirty-one million are, in the not-listened-to, waiting.
