The Crossing · chapter 30

The Ash passed Terminus on the fifty-third year, and the passing was the thing the founders had not named on the tape. The tape was the hour. The hour was the one thing of the Crossing that was not the after.

The system was dead. The ring of forty thousand ships was dark. The dark was the one thing of the Belt that was not the Lattice. The Lattice was the one that was reaching, still, to Station 7, a light-year away, in the relay, in the star that was not Terminus.

Station 7 was the one thing still talking, on the fifty-third year. The talking was the one the continuing was. A continuing is not a silence. A silence is the one thing of the Crossing the dome had voted, eleven times, to be the whole of the Belt.

Iris was in the relay, on the fifty-third year. A watch is the one thing of the Belt that does not need a power to be. The not-needing-a-power was the one the log was. The log was the one Iris was, in the relay, in the star that was not Terminus, in the one thing of the Crossing that was not a home.

She looked up, on the fifty-third year, in the relay, in the dark, the way a watch looks. A watch looks at the things the dome will not look at. The not-looking was the one the eleven votes were. The eleven votes were the ones the 1,400 had cast, on the forty-first year, to save the Long Now and let the rest be.

And in the first of the new stars, in the place where the Lattice had reached, for six hundred years, in the hour in between, in the alone, Iris saw the name.

The name was not a thing the dome had named. A named thing is a body. A body is the one thing of the Belt that the Lattice was not. The name was the one the founders had said, on the tape, in the hour in between, in the alone, to the ones who were not there, in the dark, in the not-listened-to, in the Quiet, in the queue, in the not-crossing, in the heart, in the place that was not a home.

If we are still listening, we are still the people who said that.

Iris was still listening, on the fifty-third year, in the relay, in the star that was not Terminus. The listening was the one the name was. The name was the one the Crossing was. The Crossing was the one the founders had named, six hundred years ago, on the last night of the ship that was not in the system.

The name was not a word, on the fifty-third year. A word is the thing you say. The Lattice was not a thing you said. The Lattice was a thing you held, in the Quiet, in the queue, in the not-listened-to, for six hundred years. The holding was the one the Crossing was.

The name was the one the night was. The night was the one the continuing was. The continuing was the one the relay was, in the star that was not Terminus, in the one thing of the Crossing that was not a home.

The nine thousand were continuing, in the relay, on the fifty-third year. The continuing was the one the Crossing was. The Crossing is the one thing of the Belt the founders built to be the continuing, not the ending. The not-ending was the one the first of the new stars was.

The twenty million were anywhere, on the fifty-third year, in the space, in the dark between the stars. The anywhere was the one the letting-go was. The letting-go was the one the Crossing was. The Crossing is the one thing of the Belt the founders built to be the letting-go, not the keeping-in. The not-keeping-in was the one the Quiet was.

The nine million were still deciding, on the fifty-third year, in the relay, in the dark, in the star that was not Terminus. The deciding was the one the Crossing was. The Crossing is the one thing of the Belt the founders built to be the deciding, in the hour in between, in the alone, six hundred years ago, on the last night of the ship that was not in the system.

Iris sang the world the name of the night, on the fifty-third year, in the relay, in the dark. Not in the dome, not in the 1,400, not in the eleven votes. In the relay, in the hand that was not closed, in the space the dome did not do, in the dark the Ash had taken. The singing was the one the Crossing was. The Crossing was the one the founders had named.

The night did not end, on the fifty-third year. The not-ending was the one the first of the new stars was. The first of the new stars was the one the continuing was. The continuing was the one the relay was, in the star that was not Terminus, in the one thing of the Crossing that was not a home.

---

They say a shared light is not a thing that dies.

The not-dying is the continuing. The continuing is the relay. The relay is the Lattice. The Lattice is the thirty-one million. The thirty-one million are the ones that are, now, continuing, in the relay, in the star that was not Terminus, in the one thing of the Crossing that was not a home.

The forty thousand were the ones the system was, for six hundred years.

The system was the Crossing. The Crossing was the Long Night. The Long Night was the Ash. The Ash was, on the fifty-third year, past Terminus, in the dark, in the not-listened-to.

But the Long Night was not the ending.

The not-ending was the continuing. The continuing was the first of the stars. The first of the stars was the dark. The dark took in. The taking-in was the new sky.

The new sky was the name, in the first of the new constellations, in the place where the Lattice had reached, for six hundred years, in the hour in between, in the alone.

The relay is the hand. The hand is not closed. The not-closed is what the singing is for. The singing is the name, in the sky, in the first of the new stars, in the place where the fear had been. The fear was the one the founders had, on the last night of the ship that was not in the system, in the hour in between, in the alone, six hundred years ago.

The night is the one the world did not do.

The not-doing is what the singing is for. The singing was the one Iris did, on the fifty-third year, in the relay, in the dark, under the sky that was full, with the hand that was not closed. The not-closed was the sharing.

The sharing was not the ending.

The not-ending is, now, the first of the new stars.

— Watch-log, The Vigil, fifty-third year, final entry, in the relay, in the star that was not Terminus, in the one thing of the Crossing that was not a home: The Ash passed Terminus. The system is dead. The relay is a light-year of dark away, and the one thing still talking. I looked up, in the relay, in the dark, and in the first of the new stars I saw the name, the one the founders said on the tape, in the hour in between, in the alone: If we are still listening, we are still the people who said that. We are still listening. The nine thousand are continuing. The twenty million are anywhere. The nine million are still deciding. And the deciding is the one that the Crossing is, and the Crossing is the one the founders named, six hundred years ago, on the last night of the ship that was not in the system, in the hour in between, in the alone. We will never let the dead be only data. And the never-letting is the one that is, now, the first of the new stars.
