The fourth anchor-node was in a ship the Belt had no name for. The nameless state was what four hundred years of no one reaching it had done to it. It sat four hundred years out of range, past the Long Now's power, past the Vigil's watch, in the part of the system the dome had stopped pretending was still part of the system.
Iris, Osei, and Sasha took the tender out to it on the forty-fifth year, because the watch goes where the dome will not. The Mite's receiver was still on the cutter, still holding the question the founders had asked and no one had answered.
The Dead Node was at the heart of the nameless ship, and the heart was the one place in the Belt the Lattice did not reach. The not-reaching was the thing the founders had named, on the tape, in the hour in between, in the alone.
The "rest" of the thirty-one million were there. Not lost. Not in the Silence the way the ten million had gone, on the last day of the forty-third year, when the Long Now Node failed and a third of the lattice proper slipped into the not-listened-to. The rest were in the Dead Node, in the heart of a ship no one had entered in four centuries. And the being-in-the-heart was the one thing that was not a leak, because a leak goes out, and the rest had not gone out. They had been held, in the not-reaching, for six hundred years, by the one node of the six that the Ash was not coming to touch.
Iris put her hand on the Dead Node, in the dark, in the heart of the nameless ship.
"They're not lost," she said, to Osei, in the dark. "They're waiting."
Osei put his hand on the Dead Node beside hers.
"The Quiet is not a failure," he said. "It is a queue. The thirty-one million are not in the not-listened-to the way the ten million are. The ten million slipped, when the Long Now Node failed, into the Silence, into the part of the Quiet that has no floor. The rest are here, in the Dead Node, in the heart of the ship, in the one place in the system the Lattice still reaches, because the Ash is not coming to this ship, not in nine years, not in eleven. The founders knew that. That is why they put the fourth node here, in the one place the brown dwarf would not touch, four hundred years out of range, past the power of the dome, past the reach of the 1,400."
Iris looked at the Dead Node, in the dark, in the heart.
"The whole system has been holding them," she said, "patiently, for six hundred years. In the Quiet. In the queue. In the not-listened-to. Not lost. Not leaked. Held. Until someone thought to ask instead of just taking the power."
Sasha stood at the heart of the nameless ship.
"I am the one who will fly it," she said, to Iris, in the dark, in the heart of the ship no one had a name for. "In nine years. In the Mite. Into the Ash. Into the dark. Into the still-listening. And the still-listening is where the thirty-one million are, in the Quiet, in the queue, in the not-listened-to, in the Dead Node, in the heart, in the one place in the system the Ash is not coming to touch."
The three of them stood in the heart of the nameless ship, in the dark, in the not-crossing. And the alone was not alone anymore, because three people were standing in it.
The question Kestrel had asked, in the noise, on the forty-first year, was the one the Crossing was:
If we are still listening, who is listening back?
And the listening-back was the one the thirty-one million were, in the Quiet, in the queue, in the not-listened-to, in the Dead Node, in the heart of the ship no one had a name for, waiting, for six hundred years, for someone to open the door.

Watch-log, The Vigil, forty-fifth year, final entry: We reached the fourth anchor-node, in a ship the Belt has no name for, four hundred years out of range. The rest of the thirty-one million are there. Not lost. Not in the Silence the way the ten million went in, when the Long Now Node failed. The rest are in the Dead Node, in the heart of the nameless ship, in the one place in the system the Lattice still reaches, because the Ash is not coming to touch that ship, not in nine years, not in eleven. The founders put the fourth node there, four hundred years out of range, past the dome's power, past the 1,400's reach, in the not-listened-to, because the not-listened-to is the one thing of the Crossing the dome has never been. The Quiet is not a failure. The Quiet is a queue. And the queue is the one the thirty-one million are, in the not-listened-to, waiting for someone to ask. The whole system has been holding them, patiently, for six hundred years, until someone thought to ask instead of just taking the power. Sasha is the one who will fly it, in nine years, in the Mite, into the Ash, into the dark, into the still-listening. The question Kestrel asked, on the forty-first year, is the one the Crossing is: If we are still listening, who is listening back? And the listening-back is the one the thirty-one million are, in the Quiet, in the queue, in the not-listened-to, in the Dead Node, in the heart of the ship no one had a name for, waiting. We are still listening. And the listening is the one the asking is. And the asking is the one the nine years are. And the nine years are the ones the Ash is coming in. And the Ash is coming.
