The Crossing · chapter 19

The Council came for the Mite on the forty-eighth year, and they came not with a vote but with the 1,400's own power — the one thing of the Crossing the dome still had, and the one thing it had not, until that day, used against a ship.

It had not been a decision. The dome had not met, since the forty-fifth year, to vote on the Crossing, because voting was the one thing the dome did not do on a thing that was not a saving. What it had done was the thing a body does when it has stopped deciding: it had acted, on the one thing of the Belt it could still act on — its own ship, and its own power. The power was the one the Ash was not yet close enough to take.

They came for the receiver. They came for the Seed Node, the thing Osei had carried back from the Meridian on the forty-seventh year, the last of the founders' machines, the one that held the thirty-one million's answer. The one that was not in the Lattice, and therefore not a thing the dome could vote on, and therefore not a thing the dome could let be.

Rhee led them across the light-hour to the Mite, and she led them the way she led everything: with the flat calm of a person who has done the arithmetic and found the number was not the one she wanted.

Osei was in the Mite's hold when they came. He had come back, from the Meridian, to be where the answer was.

He held the Seed Node when the 1,400's power reached the Mite.

The Council could take the Mite. The Council could take the receiver. The Council could not take the Seed Node, because the Seed Node was not a thing the dome could vote on. A thing the dome cannot vote on is not the dome's. The not-the-dome's was the one Osei was, in the hold, in the dark, in the not-listened-to.

Osei died, on the forty-eighth year, holding the Seed Node.

He died so that the Seed Node would not go to the eleven, with the thirty-one million's choice in it. The choice was the one thing of the Belt the founders had built the Crossing to keep from being a vote. Osei had carried it that far.

Sasha and Iris were not in the Mite when the power reached it. They were on the far side, in the receiver's antenna, in the part of the ship that was not a home.

The Seed Node was in Iris's log when the eleven took the Mite. And a log is a person's, and a person is the one thing of the Belt the dome could not vote into silence.

The eleven took the Mite, on the forty-eighth year. They did not take the Seed Node. They did not take the thirty-one million's choice. The not-taking was the one thing of the Crossing the founders had built, six hundred years ago, on the last night of the ship that was not in the system, in the hour in between, in the alone.

We will never let the dead be only data.

The choice was not data. The choice was the asking. The asking was the one the thirty-one million were, in the Quiet, in the queue, in the not-listened-to, in the Dead Node, in the heart, in the nameless ship, four hundred years out of range, with four years to the Ash.

Osei's death was the one thing of the Crossing that the dome did not vote on. The not-voting was the one the eleven did, in the Mite, in the hold, in the not-listened-to, in the place Osei had died holding the last of the founders' machines — so that the choice would not be their vote.

---

Watch-log, The Vigil, forty-eighth year, first entry: The Council came for the Mite, on the forty-eighth year, with the 1,400's own power, the one thing of the Crossing the dome still had. They came for the receiver and the Seed Node, the thing Osei carried back from the Meridian, the last of the founders' machines, the one that held the thirty-one million's choice. Osei was in the hold when they came. He held the Seed Node. He died holding it, so that it would not go to the eleven, with the choice in it. The not-forgetting is the last of the founders' work, and the last of the founders' work is the thing that remembers, and the remembering is the Crossing. Sasha and I were not in the Mite, when the power reached it. We were on the far side, in the antenna, in the part of the ship that was not a home. The Seed Node was in my log. A log is a person's, and a person is the one thing of the Belt the dome could not vote into silence. The eleven took the Mite. They did not take the Seed Node. They did not take the choice. Four years. The Ash is coming. And the Crossing is the one thing of the Belt that is not a vote.
