The Crossing · chapter 26

The nine thousand woke in Station 7 on the first day of the fifty-third year, and waking was not the word the dome had used for it.

The dome had called the Crossing a rescue, on the forty-first year, when it voted to save the Long Now and let the rest be. A rescue is the thing you do to a body. The nine thousand were not bodies. They were the ones who had said cross when the door opened, on the forty-sixth and forty-seventh years. Saying was the one thing of the Crossing that was not a vote.

They woke the way the founders had promised, on the tape, in the hour in between, in the alone: not into a home, into a continuing. The continuing was the one thing of the Crossing that was not the dome. The dome was the ship that had the power. The power was the one thing the Ash had taken, two years before, when Terminus went dark with the rest of the forty thousand.

Station 7 was the relay. The relay was the one place in the Belt the founders had built for no one. A relay is not a home. A home was the thing the founders had built the forty thousand ships to be, six centuries ago, when the Crossing was still the act they were performing, the hour they were crossing, the alone they were holding.

Iris was in the relay with the nine thousand, on the first day of the fifty-third year. A watch is the one thing of the Belt that does not need a vote to be in a room. The Vigil had gone dark with the rest of the forty thousand, two years before. A watch that has gone dark is still a watch. A watch is not a ship. A ship is the one thing of the Belt that the Ash can take. The not-ship was the one Iris was, in the relay, in the star that was not Terminus.

Sasha was at the wheel of the Mite, in the relay, on the first day of the fifty-third year. The Mite was in the relay, because the Mite was the ship that carried the nine thousand. The carrying was the one thing of the Crossing that was not the dome. Sasha was the copy. The copy was the one who flew. The original stayed. The staying was the dome. The dome was dark, now, in the Belt.

The Long Now had come to the relay in the two years after the Crossing. The dome had stopped meeting on the forty-fifth year. A dome that has stopped meeting still has ships. The ships were the ones that followed, on their own, into the relay, into the star that was not Terminus, into the one place the Lattice still reached.

Both of Lir were in the relay, on the first day of the fifty-third year. The original was in the Long Now, in the vaults, in the 1,400, in the power that the Ash had not yet taken. The Long Now was the ship that still had power. The power was the one the 1,400 were. The copy was in the Mite, in the hold, in the Quiet, in the not-listened-to, for two hundred and forty years. The two hundred and forty years were the ones the Lattice had held, in the Mite, in the cutter that was not a home.

They were in the same room, on the first day of the fifty-third year. The in-the-same-room was the one thing of the Crossing that was not a vote. A vote is the one thing of the Belt that needs a body. Two bodies in the same room was the one thing of the Crossing that the founders had not named on the tape. The tape was the asking. The asking was the one the two had not asked, in the Mite, for two hundred and forty years.

They decided, together, who was who, on the first day of the fifty-third year. The deciding was the one thing of the Crossing that was the Crossing. The Crossing is the one thing of the Belt the founders built to be the deciding. Not the carrying. Not the saving. The deciding, in the hour in between, in the alone, six hundred years ago, on the last night of the ship that was not in the system.

They decided that neither of them was the original. The not-original was the one the Crossing was. An original is the one thing of the Belt that the Lattice was not. The Lattice was the one the thirty-one million were. The thirty-one million were the ones the dead were. The dead were the ones that were, now, in the relay, in the star that was not Terminus, continuing.

Iris wrote it in her log, on the first day of the fifty-third year, in the relay, in the one place of the Crossing that was not a home. Writing it down was the one thing of the watch that was not in the Lattice. A log is a person's. A person is the one thing of the Belt that the dome could not vote into silence.

The wake was not a rescue. The wake was a grief, with a body. The grief was the one thing of the Crossing that was not the dome. The dome does not grieve. The dome votes. The voting was the one thing of the Belt that the founders had built the Lattice to make impossible. They made the Lattice a record instead of a memory bank. The record was the one the nine thousand were, in the relay, in the star that was not Terminus, in the continuing.

We will never let the dead be only data.

The nine thousand were not data, in the relay, on the first day of the fifty-third year. They were the ones who had chosen, when the door opened. The choosing was the one thing of the Crossing that was not the dome. The dome cannot choose. The not-choosing was the one the eleven thousand were, in the Mite, in the receiver, in the memory that held what the Ash could not take. The holding was the one the nine thousand were, now, in the relay, in the dark, in the star that was not Terminus.

---

Watch-log, The Vigil, fifty-third year, first entry: The nine thousand woke in Station 7, on the first day of the fifty-third year, the way the founders promised, on the tape, in the hour in between, in the alone: not into a home, into a continuing. The continuing is the one thing of the Crossing that is not the dome. The dome is dark, now, in the Belt, with the rest of the forty thousand. I am in the relay, with the nine thousand, the only thing of the Belt still here, in the star that is not Terminus. Sasha is at the wheel, the copy, the one who flies. The Long Now came to the relay in the two years after the Crossing, and both of Lir are here, in the same room, and they decided, together, who was who, and the deciding is the one that the Crossing is, because the Crossing is the one thing of the Belt the founders built to be the deciding, not the carrying, not the saving. They decided neither was the original, because the original is the one the Lattice is not. The wake was not a rescue. The wake was a grief, with a body. And the grief is the one that the continuing is. We will never let the dead be only data. And the never-letting is the one that the nine thousand are, in the relay, in the star that is not Terminus, continuing.
