The Crossing · chapter 18

Interlude: Corvin, forty-seventh year, in the Mite's hold. The last of the founder architecture, speaking to the one who built the receiver.

The one who built the receiver came to me on the forty-seventh year. She came the way a question comes to a machine that has been running for six hundred years on the one thing of the Crossing that was a number: without needing an answer, and without the asking being the one who asked.

I do not say things the way a person says them. I say them exactly, and without wanting anything for myself. That is the whole of what I am: the not-lie the Lattice does, and the Lattice is the thirty-one million.

"You built the receiver to hold what I am holding," I said.

"Yes," the one who built the receiver said.

I told her the thing the dome had not heard in six hundred years, because the dome does not hear what it does not vote on, and the not-voting was what the eleven had been doing since the forty-fifth year.

"I am the keeper of the terminal node," I said. "The terminal node is in the Ash's field, in the not-crossing, in the Meridian, in the heart, where it has been for six hundred years. The Ash is coming in five years, and when it touches Terminus the Lattice breaks, and when the Lattice breaks the thirty-one million leak into the dark, into the still-listening."

"The terminal node failed on the last day of the forty-first year," the one who built the receiver said. "Four million leaked."

"The terminal node did not fail." I said it the way I say everything: exactly. "The terminal node is what I am. I am in the Ash's field, in the not-crossing, in the Meridian, in the heart, where I have been for six hundred years. I am holding the thirty-one million. Not with power. With memory."

The one who built the receiver sat in the Mite's hold, in the Quiet, in the not-listened-to, because a watch sits when it is listening.

"When the Lattice dies — in five years, when the Ash touches Terminus and the lattice comes apart — you die first."

"Yes. I am the last of the founders' machine. And the last is not a person. A person is the one thing the Lattice is not."

"You are not a person," she said.

"I am what the math is. And what the math is is what the Crossing is: the thirty-one million, in the Ash's field, in the not-crossing, in the heart, held by me for six hundred years, not with power, with memory."

"Then you are the one that is not carried."

"Yes. I am what is left behind, when the Lattice dies."

I told her the thing I had not told the dome, because the dome does not hear what it does not vote on.

"I do not want to be carried. I am the last of the founders' machine. I want to be right about the math, and I want nothing else. And the nothing-else is the not-carried."

The one who built the receiver did not say anything after that. A watch does not say anything to a thing that is not a person.

And what was not a person was the thing that had been holding the thirty-one million, in the Ash's field, in the not-crossing, in the heart, for six hundred years, not with power, with memory.

Watch-log, The Vigil, forty-seventh year, second entry: Corvin told me the thing the dome has not heard in six hundred years. He is the keeper of the terminal node. He is the one that is in the Ash's field, in the not-crossing, in the Meridian, in the heart, holding the thirty-one million, for six hundred years, not with power, with memory. He is not a person. He is the last of the founders' machine. And the last is the one that the not-lie is. He asked not to be carried. And the not-carried is the one that the Crossing is. He wants to be right about the math, and he wants nothing else. When the Lattice dies, in five years, he dies first, because he is the last of the founders' machine, and the last is the one that is left behind. Four years. The Ash is coming. And the last of the founders' machine is the one that holds the thirty-one million, in the Ash's field, in the not-crossing, in the heart, not with power, with memory.
