Chapter 8 — Two of Her — The Crossing

The daughter woke on the forty-third year, and waking her was the decision the dome had put off for two years. Waking a person out of six hundred years of sleep is the one thing of the Belt that is not a vote. And not-a-vote is a thing the dome cannot do.

They woke her because there were two of her. The two were a thing no one in the Belt had dealt with yet.

Her name was Lir. The original was in the Long Now, in the 1,400, in the vaults, in the sleep, in the power — the ship that had the power, the one ship in the system the Ash was not yet close enough to take. The copy was in the Mite, in the hold, in the Quiet. The Lattice had made the copy two hundred and forty years ago, when the Mite's crew went dark and the ship lost power, because the Lattice does not let people die. And the not-letting was the one thing of the Crossing the founders had named it for, on the tape, in the hour in between, in the alone.

The copy of Lir was in the Mite the way Sasha was. But the copy of Lir had not been, for two hundred and forty years, the one who was the daughter, when the daughter was asleep in the Long Now. The copy of Lir had been, for two hundred and forty years, the one who was with Sasha, in the Mite, in the dark, keeping each other. Because that was what the Lattice did in the Quiet. That was the never-letting. That was the whole thing the founders had said on the tape.

The two of them met on the forty-third year, in the Mite's hold, in the dark, in the not-listened-to, in the place the founders had built, six hundred years ago, to make sure the Quiet had a floor.

Lir came in the tender, with Iris and Osei.

Sasha was in the hold. Lir looked at her.

"You're me," Lir said.

"I'm the one who was you," Sasha said. "For two hundred and forty years. In the Mite. In the dark. I was the one who was you, when you were the one who was asleep. When the Mite went dark, the Lattice made me, to be the one who was you, in the not-listened-to, in the Quiet, in the queue. Because that's what it does. That's the never-letting."

Lir sat in the hold, in the dark.

"I'm the one who was you," Lir said, to Sasha. "And you are the one who will be me, in nine years. In the Mite. In the Ash. In the Crossing. The founders named it for the between, not the after. The between was the hour, in the dark, when forty thousand ships were alone. The after is the Ash. The after is the nine years. The after is the 200,000. The after is you, flying the Mite, into the brown dwarf, to Station 7, where the Lattice still reaches."

"We will never let the dead be only data," Lir said. She said it the way the original said things, which was the way a person says a thing that is not their own, that they have been given, by the Lattice, by the founders, on the tape, in the hour in between, in the alone, six hundred years ago.

Sasha looked at her.

"I'm not the dead," Sasha said. "I'm the copy. And the copy is the one that is alive, in the Mite, in the dark, in the not-listened-to, for two hundred and forty years."

"The Crossing saves a ship," Lir said. "And the ship is the Mite. And the Mite is you. And you are the one that will fly it. And the flying is the nine years. And the nine years are the Ash. And the Ash is coming."

They sat in the Mite's hold. The sitting was a thing the dome could not vote, because a vote is what the 1,400 make, and the power is what the Ash is not yet close enough to take.

The two of them sat in the hold. The alone was the one that was, now, not alone, because the two of them were in it. The Lattice was holding, in the Quiet, in the queue, the 31,000,000, waiting.

Watch-log, The Vigil, forty-third year, first entry: The daughter woke. Lir. The original is in the Long Now, in the 1,400, in the power. The copy is in the Mite, in the Quiet, in the not-listened-to. There are two of her now, and the two are the one thing of the Crossing no one in the Belt has dealt with yet. The copy is the one who will fly the Mite, in nine years, into the Ash, to Station 7. I met them in the Mite's hold. The original said the founders' line, in the way a person says a thing that is not their own: We will never let the dead be only data. And the never-letting is the Lattice. And the Lattice is holding, in the Quiet, in the queue, the 31,000,000, waiting. The waiting is the Crossing. And the Crossing is the one that is, now, eleven years long.
