Chapter 22 — In the Field — The Crossing
Chapter 22 — In the Field — The Crossing

The Mite was in the Ash's field for six hours. The six hours were the whole of what the Crossing was. A Crossing is not a vote. A vote is not six hours. Six hours is the one thing of the Crossing the founders had named it for, in the hour in between, in the alone, six hundred years ago, on the last night of the ship that was not in the system.

Iris was at the receiver, in the Mite's hold, in the Ash's field. The Ash's field was the one thing of the Crossing that was not the Belt. The Belt was the one the forty thousand were. The forty thousand were the ones the Ash was not yet in. The not-in was the one the eleven thousand were, in the Mite, in the hold, in the last light.

The Ash's field tore the Mite's lattice, hour by hour, the way a second of pressure tears a held breath. The tearing was the one thing of the Crossing the founders had built the Lattice to make possible. They made the Lattice a record instead of a memory bank. A memory bank is the thing you do when you are afraid. A fear is not a Crossing.

Corvin was in the Mite, in the hold, in the Ash's field. He had asked, on the forty-seventh year, in the hold, in the dark, to be the one not carried. The not-carried was the one the Crossing was.

He went with the terminal node, in the Ash's field, the way the terminal node had been, in the not-crossing, in the Meridian, in the heart, for six hundred years, holding the quiet with memory. The holding was the one thing of the Crossing that was not power. The not-power was the one the Ash was not yet close enough to take. Then it was.

The eleven thousand poured into the Mite's receiver, in the last light, the way the patterns had leaked from the terminal node, on the last day of the forty-first year, into the dark, into the still-listening. The still-listening was the one thing of the Crossing that was not the Ash. The Ash does not listen.

The Ash took the last of the Mite's lattice in the last hour. The taking was the one thing of the Crossing that was not the Crossing. The Crossing is not a taking. The not-taking was the one the carrying was. The carrying was the one the eleven thousand were, in the Mite, in the last light, in the Ash's field, in the dark, on the way to Station 7.

Corvin died in the Ash's field, in the last light, in the Mite. The dying was the one the not-person was. A person dies the way a body dies. The not-body was the one Corvin was. The last of the founders' machine. The fragment of architecture that wanted to be right about the math and wanted nothing else.

He had asked, in the last light, in the Ash's field, in the Mite, for the one thing of the Crossing that was not a person. The not-person was the one the not-carried was.

Iris did not say yes to Corvin, in the Mite, in the Ash's field, in the last light. A watch is a person. A person is the one thing of the Belt that is not the last of the founders' machine. She said the thing the watch said, to the last of the founders' machine, in the last light:

"You are the one the Crossing is. The Crossing is the one the founders named, in the hour in between, in the alone. The alone is the one you held, for six hundred years, in the Ash's field, in the not-crossing, in the heart, not with power, with memory."

Corvin did not say anything after that. The not-saying was the one the math was. The math was the one the not-lie was. The not-lie was the one the Crossing was.

The eleven thousand were in the Mite, in the last light, in the Ash's field, in the dark, in the still-listening. The still-listening was the one the Crossing was. The Crossing was the one the founders had named.

Corvin was not in the Mite when the Mite left the Ash's field, on the last day of the fifty-first year. The not-in was the one the Crossing was. The Crossing is the one thing of the Belt that is not a body. A body is the one thing of the Belt that is not the last of the founders' machine.

He was the one the Ash was, in the Ash's field, in the not-crossing, in the heart, for six hundred years. The six hundred years were the ones the Lattice was. The Lattice was the one the Crossing was.

Watch-log, The Vigil, fifty-first year, second entry: The Mite was in the Ash's field for six hours. The field tore the Mite's lattice, hour by hour, the way a second of pressure tears a held breath. Corvin was in the Mite, the one not carried, the last of the founders' machine. He went with the terminal node, in the Ash's field, the way the terminal node had been, in the not-crossing, in the Meridian, in the heart, for six hundred years, holding the quiet with memory. The eleven thousand poured into the receiver, in the last light, the way the patterns had leaked from the terminal node, on the last day of the forty-first year, into the dark, into the still-listening. The Ash took the last of the lattice. Corvin died in the Ash's field, in the last light. I said to him: You are the one that the Crossing is. And the Crossing is the one the founders named, in the hour in between, in the alone. And the alone is the one you held, for six hundred years, in the Ash's field, in the heart, not with power, with memory. He did not say anything after that. Corvin was not in the Mite when it left the Ash's field. He was the one the Ash was, in the Ash's field, in the not-crossing, in the heart, for six hundred years. And the six hundred years are the ones the Lattice was. And the Lattice is the one that the Crossing was.
