The Crossing · chapter 20

The number came out on the forty-ninth year, and it came out the way the asking had come out: not the way the math had.

Corvin had put two hundred thousand on the table on the forty-second year. Two hundred thousand was the one the math gave you. The number the Mite could physically carry to Station 7. The asking gave a different number. The asking gave the one who chose.

Eleven thousand.

The eleven thousand were the ones who said cross, in the answers that came back through the receiver on the forty-sixth and forty-seventh years, warm, the way Kestrel's had come. The twenty million were the ones who said no, cold, the way the not-remembering had come. And there were nine million who did not answer at all.

Iris put the three numbers on the table in the dome, on the forty-ninth year. The dome had stopped meeting on the forty-fifth, but it had not stopped having a table. A table is the one thing of the Belt a not-meeting still keeps.

"Eleven thousand cross," Iris said, to the eleven, in the dome that had not been a dome since the forty-fifth year. "Twenty million let go. Nine million did not answer. And the three numbers are the whole of what the Crossing is."

"The twenty million who let go," Rhee said, in the flat register she gave things she had been carrying alone for a year, "are the ones we let go on the forty-first year, when we voted to save the Long Now and let the rest be. We did not ask them. We let them be. The letting-be is not the letting-go. The difference is the one thing of the Crossing you have been saying, for four years, that we cannot do."

"I am saying the thing you can do," Iris said. "Letting-go is not a vote. Letting-go is the one who said no. The no was an answer. An answer is the one thing of the Crossing the founders built the Lattice to be. You did not let the twenty million be, Rhee. You did not ask them. The not-asking is the one thing of the Belt the Lattice was built to make impossible."

The nine million were the ones no one had a number for. A number is the thing the math gives you. The math does not give you a number for the ones who did not answer. The not-answering was the one thing of the Crossing that was not a question. A question is the thing you ask. The not-asking was the one the nine million were.

They had been in the Silence so long they were no longer asking. The no-longer-asking was the one thing of the Crossing the story would have to decide, on their behalf, what six hundred years of not-answering meant. The deciding was the one thing of the Crossing that was not a vote. A vote is the one thing of the Belt the dead cannot cast. The dead were the ones who had not answered.

Iris wrote the three numbers in her log, in the Mite's hold, in the Quiet, in the not-listened-to. Writing them down was the one thing of the watch that was not in the Lattice.

"Eleven thousand cross. Twenty million let go. Nine million did not answer. The three numbers are the whole of what the Crossing is. The Crossing is the one the founders named, in the hour in between, in the alone, six hundred years ago, on the last night of the ship that was not in the system."

Sasha read it over her shoulder, at the wheel, in the hold.

"Eleven thousand is what I carry," she said. "The carrying is the one the Mite is. The Mite is the one I am. I am the one that will fly it, in three years, when the Ash touches Terminus."

"Nine million is what I do not carry," Iris said. "The not-carrying is the one the Quiet is. The Quiet is the one the queue is. The queue is the one the nine million are, in the not-listened-to, waiting. The waiting is the one the Crossing is."

They sat in the hold, in the dark, in the not-listened-to. The sitting was the one the Crossing was. Three years. The Ash was coming. The three numbers were the whole of what the Crossing was. The Crossing was the one the founders had named, in the hour in between, in the alone.

---

Watch-log, The Vigil, forty-ninth year, final entry: The number came out on the forty-ninth year, the way the asking came out, not the way the math did. Corvin said two hundred thousand, on the forty-second year, and two hundred thousand was the one the Mite could carry. The asking said eleven thousand. Eleven thousand cross. Twenty million let go. Nine million did not answer. The eleven thousand are the ones who chose, when the door opened. The twenty million are the ones who said no, and the no was an answer, and an answer is the one thing the founders built the Lattice to be. The nine million are the ones no one has a number for, because a number is the thing the math gives you, and the math does not give you a number for the ones who did not answer. They have been in the Silence so long they are no longer asking. And the not-asking is the one thing of the Crossing the story will have to decide, on their behalf. Sasha carries the eleven thousand. I do not carry the nine million. Two years. The Ash is coming. And the three numbers are the whole of what the Crossing is. We will never let the dead be only data. And the never-letting is the one that the nine million are, in the not-listened-to, waiting, and the waiting is the one that the Crossing is.
