The Second World · chapter 30

I am going to give you the revised gate. The revised gate is the thing the whole journal resolves to.

The original gate is one sentence. And the one is where it broke. The one is the growing half's reading. The growing half read the gate as the fire — the first fifty years, the boom, the spending of the pile on the fire. The boom did not spend the pile on the staying. And not spending it on the staying was the first generation's not doing the second sentence.

The revised gate is two sentences written as one, read as two. The reading-as-two is the dreaming half's. The dreaming half reads the gate as the staying. The staying is the slow way. The slow way is the longest finite.

Here is the revised gate in the plain form, because the plain form is what the Third has to carry, in the dark:

Do the most living the world allows, for as long as the world holds you.

The original said live here as long as you wish, and your power will not run out. The revised says do the most living the world allows, for as long as the world holds you. The difference is the story: from the fire to the staying, from the growing half to the dreaming half, from the boom to the slow way. That is the gate corrected.

Let me be precise about the three clauses, because the three clauses are the correction. The original's three clauses: live here — real, the partial fact of the one-way transport, the thing the gate can do. As long as you wish — the mis-spec, the thing the growing half read as boundless. Your power will not run out — the lie, the pipe that reads in joules. The revised holds the real, corrects the mis-spec, and deletes the lie. The revised is do the most living the world allows, for as long as the world holds you: the most living is the staying, and the for-as-long-as-the-world-holds-you is the longest finite. The longest finite is the correction of the wish from boundless to longer.

The gate is two sentences written as one. The first is the growing half: the fire, the what, the casting, the First's fifty years. The second is the dreaming half: the staying, the why, the living, the Second's year, the Third's arriving. The two, written as one, are the thing that broke. The two, read as two, are the thing that works.

I want to be honest about the reading-as-two. The senders wrote one sentence, because a dying world does not have the time for two. The one sentence is the growing half's document, and the growing half cannot write the second. The second sentence is not a command. It is a question. And a question is what the growing half does not have, because the growing half is busy. I had the time, because I am at the Frost, at the bottom of the curve, in the slow way — the one that has time for the question. The question is the second sentence. The second sentence is the revised gate. The revised gate is the dream realized.

The ending line of the gate is the first thought and the last thought. The first thought is what do I owe the next one who arrives. The last thought is I owe you the staying. The staying is the not-boundless. The not-boundless is the longest finite — the forever the gate meant and could not say.

Journal entry, the First, the revised gate: I am giving you the revised gate. The original gate is one sentence, and the one is where it broke; the one is the growing half's reading, the fire, the first fifty years, the boom, the spending of the pile on the fire, not on the staying, the first generation's not doing the second sentence. The revised gate is two sentences written as one, read as two; the reading as two is the dreaming half's reading, the staying, the slow way, the longest finite. The revised gate is: do the most living the world allows, for as long as the world holds you.
