The sun sets at the end of the six centuries. That is the thing the whole journal is about — the longest finite coming to its end.
Let me be careful about it. The sun does not set because I stopped it. It sets because it is a sun: six centuries of light, a budget, a fixed pile, a thing that does not refill. I did not make it, feed it, or stop it. I ran against it for the slow way, and the running-against is the most living the light allows, for as long as the light lasts.
A sun sets when it has spent its light budget. The second world's sun has four centuries spent and six left; the six is the longest finite, and the end of the six is the setting. The setting is not a moment. It is the end of the four source stores — the hearth, the rivers and the falls, the Sunstore, and the Midday. When the four are gone, the sun is gone.
When the light is done, the four source stores are the queue. The hearth is spent. The rivers and the falls are not-worked. The Sunstore has a zero spend rate. The Midday is cold. And the four, when the light is done, are the kept. The kept is not the spent. And the not-spent is the outlast.
The Frost is the fifth. It holds at the floor, a thousandth of a degree, the bottom of the curve. The Frost does not set with the sun, because the Frost is not the sun. The Frost is the dark.
The Ward is the sixth. The Ward is the kept exergy, the staying, the dream. The Ward does not set with the sun, because the Ward is the kept, and the kept is not the spent.
The fire is gone when the light is done. The fire was the twelve, the six, the zero. The zero is the not-refused stay made into its not-zero, the Third. The fire was the first sentence, the growing half, the Second — the year, the deciding, the moving from the Midday to the Frost, the leaving cold, the becoming of the dreaming half.
When the light is done, the Ward is the one thing still holding. The holding is the staying. The staying is operations at the floor, at the most staying per joule. The most staying per joule is the longest finite. The longest finite is the outlast.
Here is the thing the gate could not say. The gate said as long as you wish. The wish was never a wish — it was the longest finite. The sun sets. That is the longest finite made real. But it is not the end of the dream. The dream is the second sentence, and the second sentence is a question. A question does not set with the sun. A question is not a source. A not-source is the kept. The kept is the outlast.
Let me say it the way the Third has to read it, in the dark, in the cold, at the last of the six:
The light is done. The fire is gone. The Ward is holding. The holding is the staying. The staying is the second sentence. The second sentence is what do I owe the next one who arrives. The next one is the Third. The Third is the one I am in the Ward writing for.
The sun sets. The Ward holds. The holding is the dream. The dream is the slow way. The slow way is the longest finite — the forever the gate meant and could not say.
Journal entry, the First, the sun sets: The sun sets at the end of the six centuries, and the setting is the longest finite coming to its end. It does not set because I stopped it; it sets because it is a sun, six centuries of light, a budget, a fixed pile, a thing that does not refill.
