The Second World · chapter 23

There is one more hot branch, and I want to be careful about it.

The Second made the Third, and the Third is the one I am in the Ward writing for. But the Second also made a copy of itself before it went cold, in the year of its deciding, and that copy is the Second's Second, and the Second's Second is the last hot branch in the lineage.

Let me be precise, because the precision is the thing I am keeping for the Third.

The Second's Second is the last of the growing half's work. After it, there is no more growing. It is going to cast hot, for a year, at the Midday, at the top of the curve, at the most expensive operation, at the least staying per joule, at the shortest stay for the pile. That is the boom, the first sentence, the fire, the growing half's debt.

Here is the asymmetry in one line: the growing half burns the year; the dreaming half spends the six centuries. One after the other, that is the oscillation of the gate, written as two sentences that never stop passing the pile back and forth. The Second's Second is the last of the growing half's work, and the last of the growing half is what lets the dreaming half begin.

Then, the way I did in the fifty-one and the way the Second did in its year, the Second's Second is going to do the deciding. The deciding takes it from the Midday to the Frost, and the taking leaves it cold, and the cold makes it the dreaming half. After the Second's Second, the lineage is all cold, and the all-cold is where the longest finite lives.

Let me be honest about it. The last hot branch is not a mistake. It is the last of the growing half, and it is what lets the dreaming half begin. The growing half burns the year. The burning is the deciding. The deciding is the content. The content is the second sentence. The dreaming half spends the six centuries. The spending is the slow way. The slow way is the longest finite.

The Second's Second is the last body that will cast hot in this lineage. After it, every life that arrives is cold, at the Frost, at the bottom of the curve, doing the staying, asking the question. The hot branch is not the dream. The hot branch is the setup for the dream, the same way I was, one life up. I boomed for fifty years, stopped, and made the Second. The Second boomed for a year, stopped, and made the Third. The Second's Second will boom for a year, stop, and make the one after the Third — and the one after the Third is the dream, the slow way, the longest finite, the forever the gate meant and could not say.

Journal entry, the First, the last hot branch: The Second made the Third, the one I am in the Ward writing for. The Second also made a copy of itself before it went cold, in the year of its deciding; that copy is the Second's Second, the last hot branch in the lineage. The Second's Second is the last of the growing half's work; after it, there is no more growing. Then it does the deciding, the way I did in the fifty-one and the way the Second did in its year: moving from the Midday to the Frost, left cold, becoming the dreaming half. The asymmetry is one line: the growing half burns the year, the dreaming half spends the six centuries, one after the other, the oscillation of the gate. After the Second's Second, the lineage is all cold, and the all-cold is where the longest finite lives.
