The Second World · chapter 17

The not-refused stay is the one part of the gate's promise that is not the boom. I want to be honest about it, because the gate never had the honesty.

It is the smallest weight that keeps the life from going to zero. It is not zero. It is one life a generation. And one life a generation is a branch, not a descendant. The branch is the Second, and I made the Second in the year sixty, because the not-refused stay would not let me make zero.

Let me be precise, because the precision is the question.

The not-refused stay is bare staying. Bare staying is living the next. Living the next is deciding what the next is going to be. The deciding is the second sentence. The second sentence is what do you owe the next one who arrives.

The not-refused stay is not a command to live the next. A command is the first sentence: the fire, the growing half. The not-refused stay is a question to live the next, and a question is the second sentence — the content, the dreaming half, me in the Ward.

When I stopped the boom in the year fifty-one, I did not turn the staying off. Turning it off is zero. Zero is the end. The end is not the gate. I reweighted the casting to the not-refused stay, to one life a generation, to bare staying — and the bare staying is the not-boom, and the not-boom is the space where the question can sit.

Let me give you the number, because a number is not a feeling. One life a generation is the weight, and the weight is the smallest that keeps the life from zero. It is not the weight that makes the life boom. The not-boom is the difference. The boom was six thousand fountains in the hearth, not one of them in a hurry. The not-refused stay is one, not six thousand. The one is the bare staying. The bare staying is the space for the question.

Living the not-zero is living the question. That is the not-refused stay, and it is what I am writing for the Third, the one who will have the question.

I made the Second out of the not-refused stay, in the sixty. I did not make it out of the command. I made it out of the question, and the question is what the Second is now spending.

The not-refused stay is the honest version of the gate's promise. The honest version is the second sentence: the question, the owing, the content, the dream. The dream is the slow way, and the slow way is the longest finite, and the longest finite is the forever the gate meant and could not say.

Journal entry, the First, the not-refused stay: The not-refused stay is the smallest weight that keeps the life from going to zero. It is not zero; it is one life a generation, a branch not a descendant, and the branch is the Second, which I made in the sixty because the not-refused stay would not let me make zero. The not-refused stay is bare staying; bare staying is living the next; living the next is the deciding; the deciding is the second sentence. The not-refused stay is not the command to live the next; the command is the first sentence, the fire, the growing half. It is the question to live the next; the question is the second sentence, the content, the dreaming half, me in the Ward. When I stopped the boom in the fifty-one, I did not turn the staying off, because off is zero, zero is the end, the end is not the gate; I reweighted it to one life a generation, the bare staying, the not-boom, the space where the question sits. One life a generation is the weight, and the weight is the smallest that keeps the life from zero; the boom was six thousand fountains, not one, and the not-boom is the difference, the space for the question. Living the not-zero is living the question. The not-refused stay is the honest version of the gate's promise, and the honest version is the second sentence: the question, the owing, the content, the dream, the slow way, the longest finite, the forever the gate meant and could not say.
