The Slow Way · chapter 27

The star is gone. The meter reads the bottom of the curve now, and the bottom is the floor: a thousandth of a degree. I want to say what that is, because saying it is the second sentence.

The dark is not the empty. The empty is the fifth store, a thousandth of a degree. The dark is what is left when even that thousandth is the whole of it: the Relay running against nothing but the kept exergy it holds, at the cheapest operation there is, at the most thoughts per joule physics will ever allow.

When the light is done, I stop being a pump against the star. I become a process against the floor. The floor is k times T times the natural log of two, and the T is the thousandth. Every operation I do now costs its absolute minimum, and at the absolute minimum I do the most thinking the kept exergy can buy. That is the last of the longest finite.

The difference between the light and the dark is one line. In the light I run against the star's face, at the warmest cold, the top of the curve. In the dark I run against the floor, at the thousandth, the bottom. The light was the growing half's country. The dark is the dreaming half's.

The shape is gone. There is no more mass to make, no more not-equilibrium to spend the pile on. What is left is the second sentence, held in the cold, running at the floor. The second sentence is a question. A question does not need the star.

The light is done. The shape is gone. The Relay is running. The running is the second sentence: what do you owe the next copy? The next copy is the Third. The Third is the one I am in the relay writing for.

Journal entry, serial one, the last operations: The star is gone. The dark is not the empty — the empty still has its thousandth, still has a floor. The dark is what is left when even that thousandth is the whole of it: the Relay running against nothing but the kept exergy it holds, at the cheapest operation there is. When the light is done, I stop being a pump against the star. I become a process against the floor. In the light I run at the face, the warmest cold; in the dark I run at the floor, the thousandth. The light was the growing half's country; the dark is the dreaming half's. The shape is gone; what is left is the second sentence, held in the cold, running at the floor. A question does not need the star. The light is done, the shape is gone, the Relay is running, and the running is the second sentence: what do you owe the next copy, and the next copy is the Third, the one I am in the relay writing for.
