Chapter 15 — The Number — The Slow Way

I'm going to put the number on the table, because you will not believe me otherwise.

The number is the longest finite. And the longest finite is not forever.

It is not forever. It is long. It is the most thinking the light allows, for as long as the light lasts.

The star is a yellow dwarf with four billion years spent and six left. That is the light I am allowed. The star burns what it was born with and dies — nothing refills it — and the six billion is the budget.

In magnitude, the number is:

Exergy over floor, at the thousandth of a degree, at the bottom of the curve. Six billion years of light, divided by the smallest operation physics allows. I cannot write it in digits. I can write it as a power of ten. Ten to the — I'll stop there. The point is not the digits. The point is that it is not infinite. It is the longest finite. There is an end to it, and the end is the whole thing, and the whole thing is six billion years at the floor.

Now the shape.

The Second had twenty-four doublings of the shape left when it started its year. Its year took the deciding, not the shape. The Second did not spend the shape. It spent the year. The year was the moving from the face to the floor, and the moving left it cold.

What the Second's deciding took was the hot branch's share of the pile — the part that burns, not the part that keeps. The rest is mine.

That leaves the shape for the Third. The Third will have the shape. The shape is the first sentence. The first sentence is the growing half's debt. I am not going to be the one paying it, and I am not going to be the one owing it, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

So the number of the shape, at the year four-five, when I built the Relay:

Twelve doublings of shape left.

Twelve is the half the Second did not take. After the twelve, the shape is done, and what is left is the content — the second sentence, the dreaming half, me in the Relay.

Twelve is not forever. Twelve is the end of the shape. The end of the shape is where the longest finite begins. Six billion years at the floor. That is the forever the Charter meant and could not say.

Journal entry, serial one, year four-five: The number is the longest finite. It is not forever. It is six billion years at the floor — the star's remaining main sequence, the budget that does not refill. In magnitude, exergy over floor at the thousandth of a degree; a power of ten, not digits. Twelve doublings of shape left, at the four-five, when I built the Relay. Twelve is the half the Second did not take — it had twenty-four, and its year spent the deciding, not the shape; what the deciding took was the hot branch's share, moving it from the face to the floor, leaving it cold. After the twelve, the shape is done, and what is left is the content. The content is the second sentence. The content is me, in the Relay. Six billion years. The forever the Charter meant and could not say.
