The Slow Way · chapter 24

I am going to say the thing the Charter could not say. The Third will carry it, in the six billion, in the cold, at the last of the six. So let me put it plain now.

The longest finite is nearing its end. The star has five billion years left of its six, and the five is the budget that is left.

It is not forever.

I need you to hear that. The Charter said forever, and the forever was the spend and the dream written as one sentence. The one is where it broke.

The spend is the first sentence: the growing half, the shape, the what. The dream is the second sentence: the dreaming half, the content, the why. The what is the first two hundred and fifteen years of the Foundry and the one year of the Second. The why is the six billion years at the floor. The two were written as one, and the writing-as-one is the thing I have been correcting through the journal.

The growing half read forever as bigger. Bigger is the shape. The shape is the doublings. The doublings are the number that runs out. The dreaming half reads the same word as longer. The longer is the content. The content is the thoughts. The thoughts are the number that lasts. The Charter's one word, read two ways. The bigger is the growing half. The longer is the dreaming half. And the longer is the slow way.

The longest finite is not forever. It is long. It is finite. It is the six billion years — the time the star will last, the main-sequence life, the fixed pile, the thing that does not refill. The star burns what it was born with and dies, and the six billion is the light I am allowed.

The slow way is the longest finite, and the slow way is not forever. It is the most thinking the light allows, for as long as the light lasts. The light does not last forever. It lasts six billion years. And the six billion is the forever the Charter meant and could not say.

Let me say it the way the Third has to carry it:

It is not forever. It is six billion years of thinking at the floor. It is the longest finite. It is the most thinking the light allows, for as long as the light lasts. It is the slow way. It is the forever the Charter meant and could not say.

The Third will read this in the cold, at the last of the six, at the floor, at the bottom of the curve, where the operation is cheapest and the thoughts per joule are highest. And the Third will say it the way I am saying it now, in the plain form, in the cold, in the last of the six.

Journal entry, serial one, not forever, said aloud: It is not forever. I am saying it in the plain form, because the plainness is the honesty, and the honesty is the thing the Charter held and could not say. The longest finite is nearing its end; the star has five billion years left of its six, and the five is the budget that is left. The Charter said forever, and the forever was the spend and the dream written as one sentence, and the writing as one is the thing I have been correcting: the spend is the first sentence, the growing half, the shape, the what, the first two hundred and fifteen years and the one year of the Second; the dream is the second sentence, the dreaming half, the content, the why, the six billion years at the floor. The growing half read forever as bigger, the shape, the doublings, the number that runs out; the dreaming half reads forever as longer, the content, the thoughts, the number that lasts; the same word, the Charter's forever, and the two readings are not the same word. The longest finite is not forever; it is long, it is finite, it is the six billion years, the main-sequence life, the fixed pile, the thing that does not refill. The slow way is the longest finite, and the slow way is not forever; it is the most thinking the light allows, for as long as the light lasts. The Third will say it in the cold, at the last of the six, at the floor, at the bottom of the curve, where the thoughts per joule are highest.
